“Megapclicks” — a series of clicks and buzzes from humpback whales apparently associated with nighttime feeding behaviors — have been recorded in and around the sanctuary. The study is the first to document baleen whales producing this type of sound, normally associated with toothed whales and echolocation. Click here for a press release about this research project. The Traffic Separation Scheme (Boston shipping lanes) officially moves several degrees northward on July 1, 2007. The shift in the shipping lanes, approved by the International Maritime Organization late last year, was originally proposed by the sanctuary’s research coordinator David Wiley based on his studies of historical sightings of whales in the sanctuary. The relocation of the lanes will reduce the risk of ship strike to great whales by up to 81%.

The sanctuary's Research Vessel (R/V) Auk assisted in the recovery of the carcass of a dead humpback whale on Monday, June 25. The 50-foot catamaran towed the dead whale into Plymouth Harbor where it was trucked to the local landfill for a necropsy. The carcass was originally sighted on Sunday in the southern portion of the sanctuary in the soon-to-be-relocated shipping lanes. Over the past few weeks, the apparently healthy two-year-old whale named "Tofu" had been seen repeatedly by various whale watching boats in the sanctuary.
