Fan  # 0784

photo of Fan

The stunningly, beautiful fluke of Fan was first seen off Massachusetts in 1988 and every year since.  With her graceful elegance, and playful nature this young newcomer fast became a favorite.  It would be another fiveyears before we would see the next generation (See Fan's Family Tree).  In 1993, Fan gave birth to a little male later named Slant.  Right on track, her next calf came just two years later, a third calf appeared three years after that, and her most recent one in 2000.

Fan is among the easiest whales for beginners to identify.  The glistening white fluke can be seen for a long distance.  At close proximity, the black scars on the left fluke at the trailing edge, probably made by an orca whale, are easily distinguishable.  These marks form an open "fan."
