Gloucester Maritime Heritage Center -- 23 Harbor Loop, Gloucester, MA
This museum located on Gloucester Harbor offers exhibits on fishing vessels, local maritime history, a small aquarium with hands-on exhibits, and boat building. A working marine railway can be viewed, and local artisans staff a dory-building workshop. The sanctuary has installed a new exhibit at the GMHC, that features units on seafloor geology, habitats, shipwrecks, whale watching, the food web, and the national marine sanctuary program. Video presentations provide close-up looks at various sanctuary species, including humpback whales, goosefish, cod and colorful anemones. Touchscreen kiosks allow visitors to explore the region's links to the sea and to learn about whale behavior and recent sanctuary cetacean research studies.
HOURS: Seasonal, open summer and early fall. There is a small charge for entry to the center. Call for exhibit hours at 978-281-0470.
