Management
plans are sanctuary-specific documents that:
1)
describe regulations and boundaries;
2)
outline staffing and budget needs;
3)
set priorities and performance measures for programs; 4)
guide development of future management activities.
The
management plan review process, required by law for all national
marine sanctuaries, is conducted to ensure that each site properly
conserves and protects its nationally significant living and cultural
resources.
|
The
history of the present management plan process started with
the release of two reports in the summer of 2002: State
of the Sanctuary Report and the Management
Plan Review Update: 1998-2002.
|
| |
| A
public comment period (July 1-October 18, 2002) and a series
of public scoping meetings in September and October 2002 offered
individuals and organizations opportunities to provide comments
on sanctuary management. Click here
for a summary of those meetings and links to the collected
public comments. |
| |
| Comments
were distilled into a set of broad issue area topics that
were prioritized by the Advisory Council. Twelve working groups
met from Fall 2003 through Summer 2004 and developed Action
Plans that provided options for sanctuary management in these
priority areas. Click here
for our Working Groups page. |
| |
| The
Sanctuary Advisory Council reviewed the Working Group Draft
Action Plans and forwarded its Approved Action Plans to the
sanctuary superintendent in October and November 2004. Click
here to access the draft and SAC approved action plans,
working group meeting summaries, and membership lists. |
| |
| The
site, working with the National Marine Sanctuary Program,
in preparation for the development of the Draft Management
Plan, has released a Condition
Report. An electronic version will be available soon.
Printed versions of the report are available through the sanctuary
office. |
| |
| The
Draft Managment Plan is being prepared by sanctuary staff,
the National Marine Sanctuary Program and NOAA based upon
the recommendations from the SAC Appproved Action Plans. Expected
publication date for the Draft Management
Plan is early July 2007. |
| |
| After
release of the Draft Management Plan, the sanctuary and NOAA
will schedule a series of public comment meetings and a public
comment period. Check back here for calendar listings. |
| |
| After
receipt and review of the Draft Management Plan comments,
a Final Management Plan will be published and released. An
electronic version of the plan will be available on this web
site. |
