May/June 2001 Pictures

 

The first mother-calf pair of humpback whales was seen on April 4th. Mural and her youngster were photographed by Center for Coastal Studies researchers during the monthly Sanctuary Survey cruise.

This black sea bass is one of the species covered in the new Fish of the Gulf of Maine Identification Course. The photo was taken by the SBNMS dive team during a dive the the Sanctuary last year.

 

Participants in the annual Humpback Whale Naming Workshop on March 25th gave some 60 whales names based on coloring and scars. This whale was named "14" for the marks on its left fluke.
