Sanctuary Volunteers and Donors

Volunteer of the Month -- July/August 2001

Bob Michelson

Bob Michelson -- underwater photographer and videographer, Sanctuary Volunteer Dive Team organizer and coordinator of the Fish ID course and Great American Fish Count dives -- is our first Volunteer of the Month. Bob's outstanding contributions to the Sanctuary and to ocean conservation in general, were also recognized by NOAA, when that agency awarded him one of its 2001 Environmental Hero Awards. Congratulations Bob! SBNMS photo.

Sanctuary Volunteers

The Sanctuary Office is in the process of developing a stronger and more multi-faceted volunteer program. Volunteers give a very valuable gift when they donate their time to a program such as ours. In order to ensure that none of this important resource is wasted, developing a well conceived and organized volunteer program is a necessary first step.

We envision a networking program, under the direction of a Volunteer Coordinator, that will establish a resource database, and coordinate efforts to make the best use of the myriad of time, energy, experience, and expertise being offered. Anyone interested may become a Sanctuary Volunteer. There are no special requirements. All you need is willingness and time.

To become a volunteer, call (781-545-8026), e-mail, or write to: NOAA/SBNMS, 175 Edward Foster Road, Scituate, MA, 02066.

Tell us about your interests, background experience or expertise, as well as how and when you feel most comfortable donating your time. Don't forget to include your contact information. A Volunteer Service Agreement will be sent out to you. Complete and return the form at any time, prior to the time of service. Meanwhile, we will keep your information on file and contact you with news of any developments that may be of interest to you.

  • Clerical
(bulk photocopying and mailings, and other general office duties)

  • Education/Outreach
(displaying/distributing information at educational events, becoming a docent to deliver talks to school groups and other audiences, staffing exhibits, taking photographs or video)

  • Research
(assisting with various land-based and ocean-going projects – anything from gathering/identifying/analyzing data to SCUBA diving and photography)

Many thanks to all of our past, present, and future volunteers!
