Sanctuary Quiz

Correct!

Stellwagen Bank was formed by the same geological forces that created the outer portion of Cape Cod -- the advance and retreat of the last great ice sheet. This Laurentide Ice Sheet was divided into several lobes, two of which are important in this region. The Cape Cod Bay Lobe and the Great South Channel Lobe melted and retreated at different rates, the Bay lobe moving out first and the Channel lobe taking a longer time and depositing its land fragments on the sea floor (and building up what is now Stellwagen Bank). The process of retreat is estimated to have occured from 18,000 to 15,000 years ago.
