Stellwagen Bank Sanctuary Releases Image of Palmer-Crary Wrecks on 100th Anniversary of Their Fatal Collision

The side scan sonar image shows the Louise B. Crary (on left) and the Frank A. Palmer (on right) as they sit on the seafloor of the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary. The ships collided on the evening of December 17, 1902 on their way into Boston with full loads of coal. They were part of a large group of ships and barges bringing coal to a beleaguered New England suffering an energy shortage and a cold, stormy stretch of inclement weather.
