The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Gerry E. Studds Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary (SBNMS) will honor local photographer and videographer, Robert Michelson, as one of this year’s Environmental Heroes. Michelson is being recognized for his work developing a volunteer dive team as well as his role in educating the public about the diversity of marine life in the waters surrounding Stellwagen Bank. Sanctuary Superintendent Craig MacDonald will present the award at a public ceremony at Brant Rock Beach in Marshfield.

After the presentation, the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary’s volunteer divers will participate in a training dive for the first-ever Great American Fish Count (GAFC) in the Gulf of Maine on Sunday, July 1, 2001. The GAFC will take place in the Sanctuary throughout July, 2001. The press is invited to attend the training dive.
